THE MOROCCAN EMBASSY IN LONDON AND RUSI ORGANIZE A HIGH-LEVEL CONFERENCE ON SECURITY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN – RABAT, MARCH 23RD, 2010

The Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in London, in partnership with the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and the OCP Group organised, on March 23rd 2010, a high-level Conference on Security in the Mediterranean under the auspices of the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

The Conference was entitled “Euro-Mediterranean Security: Moroccan and British perspectives”, and is enshrined in the regular consultation framework between the two countries regarding issues of common interest.

The discussions focused namely on recent developments in the Mediterranean security environment, the future of European engagement in the Maghreb as well as the region’s opportunities and challenges in terms of energy security. The conference was also the opportunity to analyse the various strategies aimed at promoting better security and stability in the region, while exploring potential mechanisms for cooperation between countries on both shores of the Mediterranean.

Senior government and military officials from the UK and Morocco took part in this event, alongside a delegation representing both Houses of the British Parliament, as well as experts and researchers from the UK and the Mediterranean Basin.

The meeting was chaired by HE Mr. Taib Fassi Fihri, Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, in the presence of Major General Jonathan Shaw of the British Ministry of Defense, Mr. Andre Azoulay, Senior Advisor to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Mrs Amina Benkhadra Energy Minister, Mr. Saad Hassar, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Interior, Mrs Latifa Akharbach, Secretary of State at the Foreign Ministry and Mr John Casson, Deputy Director for the MENA region at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
